Mizoram CM Unveils Prof. RL Thanmawia’s New Book on Chhura Folktales

Speaking about the new book, the Chief Minister emphasized its cultural and historical significance. “Although the story of Chhura has been widely known, compiling the various interpretations and narratives from different Mizo sub-tribes into a single volume was not an easy task. However, this collective documentation enriches our understanding of our shared heritage,” he said.

He dded that Chhura’s tales remind the Mizo people of their unity despite ethnic and linguistic diversities. “Even though we may now reside across three nations, and our borders may divide us, our identity remains intact,” the Chief Minister remarked. “Chhura has educated and guided us across generations.”

He further called for continued cooperation between the government and the public in preserving and promoting Mizo cultural identity, adding that a new generation of cultural leaders is being prepared to carry forward this mission.

Prof. RL Thanmawia, in his speech, shared that among the 37 books he has published so far, this one stands out due to its uniqueness and depth. He noted that unlike other folktales that are often generalized, Chhura stories exist in at least sixteen different ethnic variants, offering a rich tapestry of Mizo cultural expressions. “With God’s grace, we must continue documenting and preserving these stories,” he said. He also expressed gratitude to all contributors and supporters of the book.

The book launch was accompanied by a critical review presented by Dr. H. Laldinmawia, Chairman of the Chhura Committee. PC Lalnunmawii, a research scholar, gave a presentation titled “Chhura Hla Hril”. Students from PUC’s BA IV Semester performed Chhura songs, and F. Vanlalrochana offered a note of thanks. Tipaimukh Road Repaired to Allow Resumption of Traffic

Lamka/Tuithaphai/Songpi, April 17, 2025: A stretch of National Highway 02 along the Tipaimukh Road between Chiangpi and D. Khawzim had remained impassable for several days following a road collapse and landslides. The disruption left a large number of vehicles stranded and caused significant hardship for travelers relying on the route.

The repair work was undertaken swiftly, with local support, and the road was reopened for light vehicles. The Tipaimukh Road Transport Cooperative Society (TRTCS) Chairman, Mr. Ramhuollien, confirmed that following strong representation to the executing company, Bhartia Infra Projects Limited (BIPL), under the supervision of NHIDCL, the affected section was reconstructed. The information was confirmed as of 3:50 PM on April 17, 2025.

The Hmar Inpui General Headquarters and other concerned citizens had also raised their voices, calling for urgent action. The TRTCS expressed its gratitude for the collaborative efforts that made the repair possible.

This marks the first time in recent years that a severely damaged section of this road has been repaired promptly enough to resume traffic movement, enabling safe passage for stranded travelers and essential transport.

The repair is also linked to the ongoing Henglep road construction project, with BIPL also overseeing works in that region. The repair effort was necessitated after construction traffic and weather conditions led to road subsidence. The road was reopened to traffic starting at 6 AM, and the construction company has assured that work will continue with improved quality and supervision to prevent similar disruptions in the future.

Given the swift repair and the restoration of mobility, there was significant relief among the local population. While the full restoration and reinforcement of the road will take more time, current traffic movement has resumed steadily.

It may be recalled that the TRTCS and the Tipaimukh Road Area Transport Development Association (TRATDA) had previously met with Henglep MLA Pu Letzamang Haokip on May 29, 2024, regarding this issue. The MLA had committed to providing JCB machinery and additional support, acknowledging the urgency and critical nature of maintaining road connectivity in the region.

This stretch of the Tipaimukh Road between Chiangpi and D. Khawzim has seen repeated repair efforts over the years by dedicated local volunteers due to its importance as a lifeline for the area.

Tuithaphai, April 14, 2025: In a significant community initiative, the Khuga Ring Road Development Committee successfully carried out the repair work of the road stretch between Khawpuibung and Ngurte on April 14, 2025. This marks the fifth such effort by the committee to improve road connectivity in the area.

The newly restored road begins at the Khawpuibung junction along the Sugnu Road and connects 11 villages, including Khopuibung, Muolbem, Dumsau, Tuaitengphai, Tuibul, Thenmuol, Ngurte, Tuikham, Khuangnung, Daijang, and Tuikhamphai. With many school-going children using this route daily, the road is considered vital for local transportation and safety.

Due to the absence of direct government support, the community members, under the guidance of local leaders and the Khuga Ring Road Development Committee, took the initiative into their own hands. Residents, including youth and leaders, contributed their labor and resources to complete the roadwork.

The initiative received financial support from Singngat MLA Chinlunthang, who donated ₹5 lakh to aid the reconstruction. The road spans approximately 5 kilometers in length and 18 feet in width. The project involved the use of 12 tipper trucks and one JCB machine to complete the work, with drainage systems also improved as part of the repair work.

The Khuga Ring Road Development Committee, formed under the leadership of village chiefs, continues to play a crucial role in facilitating infrastructure development in the region, especially for two-wheeler and motor vehicle users who rely heavily on this route.

The meeting focused on the current situation of refugees in Mizoram and expressed deep concern over the increasing instances of hate speech and discrimination against them. The pipeline aims to transport natural gas from Panisagar in Tripura to various locations in Mizoram via a 104-kilometer pipeline, of which approximately 100 kilometers will pass through Mamit District. The project is expected to be completed by March 31, 2027, and as of now, 23.148 kilometers of the pipeline have already been laid.

In his address, Pu Lalchhanzova emphasized the importance of ensuring a smooth and efficient implementation of the project, noting that as citizens who will benefit from this initiative, it is imperative to support its progress. He stressed that the pipeline, made from high-quality materials, will ensure safe and reliable gas delivery to households, helping reduce costs and contributing to sustainable development.

He further mentioned that due to Mizoram’s hilly terrain, meticulous planning and execution are essential. The gas supply system will operate through electric-powered distribution within individual households, and public assurance on safety and affordability is a top priority.

To monitor and ensure the project's success, the Minister proposed regular review meetings involving the Mamit District Administration, the FCS&CA, the Commerce & Industries Department, and other stakeholders including the PWD, to tackle any challenges arising during pipeline construction.

The gas pipeline initiative, originally launched in Tripura in 1990, is now being expanded into Mizoram. IGGL is tasked with the pipeline construction, while TNGCL will handle connections within Mizoram households.

Today's meeting included detailed presentations from both IGGL and TNGCL on the ongoing work and upcoming phases of the project. Discussions also took place with various government officials and technical personnel.

The review session was chaired by Pu K. Laltlawmlova, District Deputy Commissioner, and was attended by the FCS&CA Secretary and Director, SP Mamit, and other officials from both government departments and the companies involved.

Following the meeting, Minister Lalchhanzova visited the ongoing pipeline work site in South Mamit, and also met with staff at the Land & Revenue Department and the Food & Civil Supplies Office to discuss further coordination and support for the project.
