April 8, 2025, Virthli(ONP): A high-level meeting of the Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP) General Headquarters, including its Extended Office Bearers and Advisers, was held today at the MZP Office in Aizawl. The meeting focused on the current situation of refugees in Mizoram and expressed deep concern over the increasing instances of hate speech and discrimination against them. The MZP strongly condemned such rhetoric, calling for unity and compassion in dealing with the issue.
Presided over by MZP President H. Lalthianghlima, the meeting reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to helping refugees fleeing conflict in Myanmar and Manipur. It emphasized that the Mizo people’s hospitality and support towards refugees stem from their identity as Mizos and as Christians, rooted in compassion and humanity.
The MZP noted with concern that the growing number of refugees in the state has led to a noticeable rise in discriminatory and hostile language. The organization called on authorities to take legal action where necessary if any crimes are committed among the refugee population, but cautioned strongly against generalizing or labeling all refugees negatively based on the actions of a few.
The MZP stressed that such broad-brush criticism threatens the unity of the Mizo people and goes against the spirit of brotherhood and solidarity. They extended their gratitude to the Mizoram Police and others who are working tirelessly and responsibly to manage the refugee situation with fairness and care.
The meeting also urged the Mizoram government to ensure that the support and management of refugees is handled properly and lawfully, and emphasized the need for mutual understanding between local citizens and refugees.
The MZP appealed to the public to refrain from divisive or hateful rhetoric and to continue extending support in ways that honor the shared identity and humanitarian values of the Mizo people.
