New Delhi, April 16, 2025, Virthli(ONP): Representatives of various civil society organizations from Mizoram, including CYMA, MHIP, MZP, MSU, and members of the ZORO group, met with Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan yesterday to discuss concerns regarding the Free Movement Regime (FMR) and the India-Myanmar border fencing.
The meeting, held at the Ministry of Home Affairs, North Block, was convened as part of the Home Ministry’s ongoing consultations. During the discussion, the Union Home Secretary acknowledged the concerns raised by Mizoram's civil society regarding developments along the Indo-Myanmar border and called for a cooperative approach while urging the groups not to oppose government initiatives aimed at national security.
Leaders of the NGOs conveyed their united stance through the NGO Coordination Committee (NGOCC), stressing the importance of considering the sentiments and interests of the local population. They emphasized that any decisions regarding the FMR or border fencing must take into account the unique historical and cultural ties of the people living along the border.
The NGO representatives also followed up on matters previously raised during Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s visit to Aizawl, particularly the issue of Lengpui Airport’s handover to the Airport Authority of India (AAI). In response, the Union Home Secretary informed them that discussions were already underway, with the handover process progressing as per public preference. He stated that the Mizoram Chief Secretary had already submitted a formal proposal and the process was expected to be completed within the next three months.
