First big-budget Mizo movie an instant hit

August 25, 2012

Aizawl, Aug. 24: Mapuia Chawngthu’s long-anticipated film Khawnglung Run ((The plunder of Khawnglung) was released here yesterday to packed halls and community centres.

People here, who had been eagerly waiting for Chawngthu’s latest offering since he started the protect two years ago, thronged the film venues — community centres and halls (as there are no cinemas here). Tickets for the inaugural show at the Chanmari community hall sold out within half a day, while another venue, Vanapa hall, was virtually mobbed by viewers.

Being the first “big budget” (more than Rs 11 lakh) production in the Dulian dialect, the lingua Franca of the Mizos, the film was an instant hit, as evident from the applause reverberating in Vanapa hall at the end of the show.

Produced by Leitlang Pictures, Lunglei, the film tells the story of a star-crossed couple against the backdrop of petty feuds between the Pawi and a Lusei villagers in the late 1850s which led to the plunder of Khawnglung village by Pawi chiefs, marked as the bloodiest and cruellest attack in the entire history of the Mizos.

Khawnglung Run’s epic love angle, which has been kept alive through the ages by numerous versions of the story of Chala’s bleak search for the love of his life, Thangi, who had been carried off from the plundered village as a slave by one of the Pawi warriors, was more captivating for the viewers than anything else.

Singer Alex Lalchhuankima did his best to give a spirited rendition of Chala’s evolution from a boyish young Lusei hunter in a happy village to a desperate man hunting for his lost soul mate, while Zoremsangi Hnamte brought Thangi to life on screen with her beautiful earthy looks and her fine acting.

The film was set in a specially created village near the original Khawnglung village, 145km from the capital. The cast and crew spent around six months on the set shooting the film. As history goes, the entire village was burnt down and the people massacred. The set, too, was burnt down, providing the film some of its best shots against the eerie light of the fires and the dancing shadows, while portraying the harsh realities of tribal warfare in the 18th century as well as the nuances of honour and friendship in time of distress among the villagers.

The director told The Telegraph that his objective was to create interest in youngsters about their own history and culture, which he felt, he had achieved through the film.

Many non-Mizo viewers, however, felt that English subtitles were urgently required.

The actors who played the chiefs and warriors were outstanding, particularly, the one who played the role of Thangi’s slave master, who lent the screen the brooding presence of the legendarily feared Pawi raider. Chawngthu said though many of the actors were amateur, some among them, including the female lead, were National School of Drama products.

The theme song was the much-loved old Mizo ballad, Khawnglung Run, which was sung by C. Lalruatkima supported by the Battle Cry Band. Kima Chhangte was the music director while voice recording was done at Small World Multimedia, Serkawn, Lunglei. Another unique feature of the film is that it was produced totally at Lunglei.

Chawngthu said the film would take time to break even as the budget was high, but he planned to take it to several film festivals. He was confident that he was true to his calling as a filmmaker, which was to entertain. “The public find my film entertaining and this is enough to make me happy,” he said.

ICI Central Choir: From NE to Bengaluru, with music of peace

August 20, 2012

They came to Bangalore undeterred by the fact that their own ilk was leaving the city in droves. For they knew that their music had a message of harmony, love and peace and be a balm for the troubled times.

The first performance of the Independent Church of India's central choir outside the northeast may not have been perfectly timed, keeping the recent incidents in mind, but the choir decided to go ahead shrugging off security concerns.

"We are not afraid of staying in Bangalore though many of our brothers and sisters have left the city scared for their lives," said Rev Jothanghrim Joute, youth coordinator for the choir. "Though we look like foreigners because of our Mongoloid features, we are very march a part of India. We bring the message of love and pray for peace and harmony to prevail in Bangalore and different parts of the country marred by communal tensions," he said.

The choir comprises members mostly Mizo Hmar tribals from Churachandpur district in Manipur. Hundreds attended the show by the Manipuri choir at Richmond Town's Methodist Church, which was highlighted by an extraordinary performance on Sunday evening. While the group of 25, accompanied by their conductor, sang church songs and hymns praising the Lord, their performance was infused with vibrant rock, jazz and blues influences that had the audience in thrall.

The choir, which has 12 albums to their credit, sang a set list of 20 songs, consisting of hits like Hallelujah, The Lord's Prayer, Longing for heaven and The Glory of the Lord, in English, and local North Eastern languages like Hmar and Dulian. "Amidst the prevailing tensions, the choir arrived at the right time to rejoice life. We all are children of God and we celebrate our oneness with the music," said Pastor Jonathan Bangera. (TNN)

PASSING THROUGH

Dr Micky Morton, who spoke to BTon behalf of the Independent Church of India Central Choir, says choral music is popular in the city
~Taniya Talukdar

How many cities has the ICI (Independent Church of India) Central Choir toured outside the northeast
The choir is performing for the first time outside the northeast.Church budgets are low and they cannot afford too many tours.

Is gospel music popular in Bangalore
Yes,gospel music is very popular among the youth in Bangalore, irrespective of religious beliefs. For example,Ernie Hasses show was a sell-out last Sunday. The older audience is also very appreciative of classical choral church music.

The Shillong Chamber Choir which won a reality show last year went on to perform at the White House for Obama.Do you see the ICI Central Choir doing the same in the near future
No,chamber music with intricate musical arrangements and full orchestral backing is out of their budget.

The Shillong Chamber Choir is very experimental in terms of singing non gospel music.Have they tried experimenting too
No,they are a church choir,so contemporary popular nonreligious music is not in their agenda.

The choir has 12 albums to its credit, how popular have they been
The 12 music albums released are all hits, but restricted only to the northeast region.Almost everyone in the northeast, especially from the Christian community,is aware of these songs.

Mizos are known to have good voices but do you think their talent is explored enough
Yes,they have immense vocal talent. This tour is to expose them to the rest of India, starting from Bangalore.More exposure will definitely create a greater awareness in mainland India,as you can see from the story of Mary Kom.I want to clarify that Mizo people are broadly clubbed together, but there are different sub-tribes among them. This choir is from the Hmar tribe.

What languages does the choir sing in
They are singing in English,Hmar and Dulian for the concerts in Bangalore.

How do you intend to make gospel music and the choir popular
Based on the feedback we receive from the audience,we plan to bring them back during Christmas. They might produce an English album and take it forward from there.

Mary Kom loses in semis, settles for bronze at London Olympics

August 09, 2012

LONDON (PTI) : Great Britain's Nicola Adams dashed MC Mary Kom's hopes of making it to finals as she outclassed iconic Indian pugilist 11-6 in the women's flyweight (51kg) semifinal on Wednesday, leaving her to settle for a bronze.

The five-time world champion was no match for her British opponent who was egged on by a vociferous home crowd that included Prime Minister David Cameron and last edition's silver medallist Aamir Khan.

It was Mary's 5ft 2 inches frame that became her undoing as Nicola used her big body and greater reach to a good effect, landing punches from a distance and then also staying out of her opponent's reach.

The first round was 3-1 in favour of Nicola better known as "Babyface" in the boxing fraternity. The second round saw Nicola land a lethal right hook followed by a powerful straight left which caught Mary off-guard. Three more points and consolidating the lead at 5-2, it became very difficult for the Indian to come back.

The penultimate round saw a desperate Mary trying to make a comeback but Nicola evaded the 'pint-sized' Indian dynamo as she couldn't land a few decisive blows that could have turned the tide. The round was 3-2 in favour of the British and decisive lead of 8-4.

The final round was all about how the British boxer would keep Mary Kom at bay and she did that effectively tiring the Manipuri girl, who out of frustration landed a couple of blows at the back of her opponent's head.

An 11-6 result may depict that there was some fight but it was crystal clear that the two-time World Championship runner-up was an emphatic winner.

However, a bronze is certainly a great effort from 'Magnificent Mary', whose name would be etched in the history of Indian sports as she will certainly remain the first among equals as far as women's boxing is concerned.~(PTI)

Sorry I couldn't win Gold or Silver: Mary Kom after winning Bronze

London: "Sorry, I couldn't win Gold or Silver but I gave my best," said MC Mary Kom after her 6-11 loss against Britain's Nicola Adams in the semi-final of the 51-kg category event. But she clearly doesn't need to be apologetic; she has made the country proud with her valiant effort.

Mary Kom, the diminutive Indian woman boxer who carried into the Olympic semi-finals the weight of an entire nation's expectations, will bring home a Bronze medal. She lost a closely fought bout against World number 2 Nicola Adams today. The score in each round, 1-3, 1-2, 2-3, 2-3. As former boxer Poonam Beniwal, a friend of Mary's said, "Mary fought and lost like a champion. She shouldn't be sorry."

British Adams held all the cards. A home advantage and a height and reach advantage against the 5 feet 2 inches tall Manipuri. Mary praised her opponent and said, "She was better in 1st and 2nd rounds".

Mary Kom is also new to the 51 kg category - she used to fight in the 48 kg category earlier. But the focused 29-year-old Indian mother of twins put up a gritty fight in every round.

Hours before her semi-final bout, Mary Kom had tweeted: "Ready for my match. Thanks all for your wishes. Hope to make my country proud. Jai Hind!" She did India proud with her effort.

In her last two bouts Olympic bouts before the semi-final, she had looked unbeatable, winning both convincingly to reach the semis. She beat Karolina Michalczuk, a much taller and bigger boxer from Poland, to enter the quarterfinals. And later she won her quarter-final bout against Maroua Rahali of Tunisia by 15-6 margin.

A mother of two, Mary Kom started her career as an athlete but later switched to boxing following the success of fellow Manipuri boxer Dingko Singh. She started her boxing career in 2000 after which there was no stopping her.

In 2001, she lost in the final and had to settle for a silver medal. In 2002, she started her domination at the AIBA World Championships where she won her first gold. She continued to dominate women's boxing till 2006 after which she took a 2-year sabbatical due to the birth of her twins. She returned with a bang in 2008 winning her 4th successive World Championship.

Her feat earned her the title of 'Magnificent Mary' from the AIBA. In 2010, she had the honour of bearing the Queen's Baton in the opening ceremony run at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in the stadium. She has also been awarded the prestigious Arjuna Award in 2004, Padma Shri Award in 2006 and the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna in 2009 for her achievements in Boxing.

In 2010, she was voted India's Sportswoman of the Year. Mary Kom also became the International Boxing Association's Ambassador for Women's Boxing in 2009.

________________________________________________

PRESS RELEASE

The Government of Mizoram arrested the HPC(D) Chairman, H.Zosangbera from Delhi Indira Gandhi International Airport on July 17, 2012 and is now in its custody. The HPC(D) Chairman was on his way to meet officials of the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India to intimate about the urgent need for political solution of the Hmars in Mizoram.

On June 10, 2012, the HPC(D) Army Chief, Lalropui and the Deputy Chief of Army, Lalbieknung were also arrested by the Mizoram Armed Police (MAP) from Silchar Airport (Assam) when they were on their way to visit the HPC(D) Designated Camp and attend a peace meeting with the leaders of the All Parties Leaders (Mizoram). The Chief Minister of Mizoram was aware about the peace meet and has given a nod to the All Party Leaders (Mizoram). The Government of Mizoram, once again, broke the trust and confidence that has been slowly building up after the first term of the Suspension of Operation (SoO) between the HPC(D) and the Government of Mizoram (November 11, 2010 – May 11, 2011). The Mizoram Armed Police (MAP) and the Government of Mizoram blatantly trespass with the arrest as the HPC(D) has Suspension of Operation (SoO) with the Government of Assam.

The HPC(D) strongly condemns the coward act of the Government of Mizoram as it stands against the just and peaceful approaches adopted by the HPC(D) to secure the Constitutional rights of the Hmars in Mizoram. The HPC(D) is convinced that the Government of Mizoram is in no way interested in securing peace and democracy in Mizoram. The HPC(D) shall not be a silent spectator to the necessary belligerency adopted by the Government of Mizoram; the recently conducted “Flag March” in Sinlung Hills was un-democratic and exaggerated; the attempt to “segregate” the Hmar peoples by the Home Department, Government of Mizoram, with its order (No. D. 32020/24/2010-HMS) is a shame. It will forever stand as the biggest insult to Mizoram’s peace and democracy. The Government of Mizoram must immediately end its “segregationist” policies that are directed against the Hmar people. The decades of suppression and discrimination by the Government of Mizoram in collusion with Mizoram based NGO has resulted in giving no place and space for Hmar language, culture, identity and tradition; our people are deprived and marginalized from getting our due and fair share in governance, welfare, development, education, entitlement and justice. The rights of the suppressed Hmar people shall not be allowed to be thwarted and deterred by the exercise of such uncalled for belligerency. Enough is enough!

If the Home Minister of Mizoram, Lalzirliana and his cahoots thinks that the rightful demand of the Hmar people of Mizoram and a peoples’ movement launched under Hmar People’s Convention (Democratic) could be suppressed with the arrest of our selfless leaders, they shall be proven wrong. The Government of Mizoram shall be responsible for the fall-out. As a matter of fact, our movement will be taken to a higher level and we are more determined towards prioritizing our goal ever than before. There are hundreds of Hmar youths and leaders who are ready to respond to the call of securing our rights and the long-time aspirations of the Hmar people that are also represented by our arrested leaders. Let the Mizoram state police trace and track us anywhere and everywhere if it thinks that would wrest our movement and aspirations which will be again proven wrong.

The Government of Mizoram has been blindly accusing the HPC(D) of planning several attacks on the people and state of Mizoram. We are also accused of disintegrating the Mizos of Mizoram and elsewhere. We would like to remind one and all by asserting that the Hmars’ movement in Mizoram and its adjoining areas is not against any individual people or community but only for securing a just socio-economic and political development of the Hmars in Sinlung Hills areas of Mizoram which has not only Hmars living in it. Moreover, our struggle is for improving democracy and for the decentralization of the same, which has eluded the Hmar people for many decades. The just development of Hmar people of Mizoram will in no way disintegrate the Mizos; instead it will strengthen and integrate the Mizos. Our time has come to secure our fair and equal share in welfare, democracy and development; no one can stop us from securing our rights.

In the larger interest of securing the goals of the peoples’ movement, the HPC(D), in its recently concluded Emergency Executive Council appointed Shri L.T. Hmar to be the Chairman in-charge of the HPC(D).

We appeal to all right thinking citizens to take note of the treacherous policy of the Government of Mizoram towards the Hmar people. The Hmar people or the HPC(D) shall not be responsible for any outcome bred by the decades of treacherous, segregationist and suppressive and oppressive actions of the Government of Mizoram. We remain committed to our rightful struggle and aspirations; we shall continue the good fight under all circumstances until we achieve our goals. In order to realize the great future, we shall sacrifice everything that is required of us.

Home  Department, Mizoram in 25-11-2011 nia Hmar raltlanhai chungthua DC  tinhai  kuoma  thupek  ansuo  chu  zanikhan  Mizoram  Home Minister le  Home  Department hnuoia Officers han meeting  an neia, order a  “Hmar  hnam”  ti po chu peiin  Mizoram  sawrkarin  thupek  a  lo  insuo  tahai chu siem that a nih.

Post Bureau, Aizawl (July 17): Mizoram government on Tuesday clarified that the Hmar families who took refuge in Mizoram in the wake of ethnic violence in Assam during the last two years were given protection a s per the “standard operation procedure” and that there was no discrimination based on communal lines.

The Mizoram state government’s statement was in reaction to the recent Hmar Students’ Association’s recent memorandum to the state government to stop “segregating” the Hmar people.

A meeting of home department officials chaired by home minister R Lalzirliana on Tuesday reviewed t he government’s order of December 25, 2011 that directed all deputy commissioners not to issue family ration cards and NREGS job cards to the Hmar refugees.

The Mizoram state government maintained that the order was issued based on the all-India standard operation procedures (SOPs) for protecting internally displaced persons (IDPs). As the Hmars also a tribe of Mizo, the HSA considered the Mizoram government’s order as discriminatory of Hmars from the rest of Mizo tribes living in Mizoram.

However, the Mizoram government admitted its mistake in terming the refugees as Hmar refugees which could be construed as discrimination against the entire Hmar community. Therefore, the word Hmar was deleted from the government’s order.

“The government deeply regrets that the order has hurt the sentiments of a section of the people,” said the official statement. The official statement also stated that the Mizoram government’s stand is that Mizoram is a home for all Mizo tribes within and outside Mizoram.

May 17, 2012

Hmar Martyrs DayAizawl, May 16: In commemoration of the 'sacrifices' made by the Hmar People's Convention (HPC) for its people, Hmar Martyr’s Day, was observed today in all the areas dominated by the Hmar community. The commemorative event was held in Manipur with the Martyr’s Trophy (football tournament) in Tuithraphai, Churachandpurr ditrict.
Meanwhile, the main event was held in Hmarkhawlien, 35 km from Silchar town in southern Assam at Hmarkhawlien Play ground where more than 3000 people gathered to solemnly observe the day with dignity. President of Hmar Students’ Association (HSA), Barak Valley Mr Lalthuthlung Hmar informed NNN that the programme could not be started as per schedule due to rain but surprisingly beyond expectation, about 3000 people thronged the play ground. The main programme was organised by HSA, Hmarkhawlien Unit.
In Mizoram, the day was solemnly observed across HPC-D dominated area. The main programme was organised at Berawtlang in Aizawl. The programme was scheduled to be held at YMA Hall, Chanmari hall but due to some unavoidable reason the venue was shifted to Berawtlang in Zemabawk at the last minute. Hundreds of people people gathered to pay homage to the departed ‘Hmar Pasalthra’ who laid down their lives for the cause of the Hmar community. The programme was being organised by a joint collaboration of Hmar Literature Society, Mizoram chapter; Hmar Art & Culture, Mizoram and Hmar Students’ Association, Aizawl Jt. Hqrs. Crooners like Mizo Idol top 3, Lalengvari Sinate a.k.a Mami Sinate; Rosy Vanlalhlani;  Caroline Biakthansangi and Lawrence Laldiklien from Manipur and Sinlung Choir have mesmerised the audience with their numbers.
Meanwhile, the day was also observed across Hmarram in Tipaimukh area of Manipur like Senvawn, Parbung, Lungthulien, Leisen, Pherzawl, Taithu and other Hmars inhabited villages. Reports also said that at Vangai range places like Kangreng, Patpuihmun, Sartuinek, Phulpui and many other Hmar inhabited villages have observed the day. During the day Hmar households have their traditional shawls flying within their respective compound the entire day to mark their observance of Hmar Martyrs’ day.

Mizoram rules out Hmar autonomy

April 29, 2012

Aizawl (Zodinsanga): Mizoram home minister R Lalzirliana has made it crystal clear that an autonomous district council for the Hmar-dominated areas in north and northeastern Mizoram is not on the cards.

“Three autonomous district councils (ADCs) had been created in Mizoram without our consent. As Mizoram was a Union Territory at that time, we could not do anything (to prevent the creation of the ADCs). We are not giving any more ADC for any tribe,” Lalzirliana told a meeting of officials and representatives of major political parties and NGOs here on Wednesday.

The home minister’s statement came in the wake of a misunderstanding between underground outfit Hmar People’s Convention-Democratic (HPC-D) and the central committee of Young Mizo Association (YMA), Mizoram’s biggest and most influential civic organisation, over the HPC-D’s demand f or ADC for the Hmars.

A  non-official who attended the meeting said, on condition of anonymity, that the home minister even encouraged the central YMA leaders not to quail at the militants’ threats but to stand firm (on their opposition to the HPC-D’s demand for ADC).

Even as the central YMA president has denied having said the central YMA had implored the Mizoram government not to fulfill the HPCD’s demand, the home minister said, “You must stand by your words.”

Meanwhile, the imbroglio between the HPC-D and the central YMA has worsened with all the 16 branches under Tuisual group YMA tendering their resignation on Wednesday as the April-25 deadline for the central committee of YMA to find peaceful solution with the militant group ended without any positive move from the central YMA leaders. Tuisual group area is the core of the HPC-D’s demanded area while three other YMA groups – Tuivai, Serlui and Chalfilh – have a few branches falling under the demanded area.

Formed by the European missionaries in 1935 as a social institution, the YMA has a total of 46 groups and 787 branches within and outside Mizoram where a sizeable Mizo community lives. “With the dissolution of the YMA, Sakawrdai Youth Association was formed this morning,” said Lallianzuala, the resigning vice-president of Tuisual group YMA, from Sakawrdai. “However, this is an ad hoc committee. We will reconstitute the YMA once the central YMA and HPC-D find a peaceful solution to the imbroglio,” he added.

It may be recalled the militant outfit had on April 17 served a diktat to all YMA branches under the Sinlung Hills Development Council (or HPC-D demanded area for Hmar autonomy) to resign before the end of April, in a strong reaction to the central YMA president T Sangkunga’s alleged remarks in his public speech that the central YMA had implored the government not to grant ADC to the Hmars.

A few other branches under the three YMA groups will decide their future on Thursday, the resigned YMA leader said. Meanwhile, rubbishing the central YMA’s claims that it had communicated with some leaders of the H Zosangbera faction of the HPC-D which had served the diktat to dissolve the YMA branches and negotiations were in progress, the HPC-D said in a press handout on Wednesday that none of the central YMA leaders talked to any HPC-D leader.

“After all, any negotiation will be meaningless unless the central YMA stops to spread falsehood that creation of a H mar ADC will divide Mizoram into smaller states,” the communiqué, signed the outfit’s information secretary John F Hmar said. The Sinlung Hills Development Council (SHDC) was a result of a settlement of peace signed between the HPC and the Mizoram government in 1994. Unsatisfied with the peace accord, some HPC leaders formed HPC-D to continue an armed struggle for the Hmars’ autonomy.
