Churachandpur, July 6, 2025: The Zomi Council has appealed to the Government of India and the Ministry of Home Affairs for a pragmatic and security-focused approach in dealing with the extension of the Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreement involving hill-based groups, especially the United People's Front (UPF-Zomi).

In an official press statement released from its headquarters in Lamka, the Zomi Council expressed concern over mounting pressure on the UPF (Zomi) to shut down at least two of its three designated camps - Camp Muvanlai, Mt. Sinai, and Phaiba - all located in Zomi-majority hill areas, far from the volatile Imphal Valley.
Following internal consultations, the Council emphasized that keeping all three camps operational is crucial for the effective management of border security along Mizoram and the India–Myanmar international border. The statement warned that closing these camps could create a security vacuum, potentially inviting non-SoO armed groups and secessionist forces to destabilize peace in the region.
The Zomi Council stressed the importance of non-interference, urging the government to support peace-building efforts instead of disrupting existing structures. It noted that SoO groups amenable to dialogue, especially those committed to peace like the hill-based outfits, should be treated with logical and reasonable consideration.

The Council further urged the Ministry of Home Affairs to postpone any move to reduce designated camps, particularly for SoO groups currently unwilling to cooperate. However, it reiterated the urgent need to extend the SoO agreement in the broader interest of public safety and regional stability.
“The Zomi Council stands ready to support any future dialogue process aimed at long-term peace and stability,” the statement concluded.
