VIRTHLI

Churachandpur, July 2, 2025, Virthli: The Zomi Council has issued a public statement expressing cautious optimism and renewed hope amid reports suggesting a possible visit by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Lamka (Churachandpur District), Manipur, later this month.

In a press release dated July 2, 2025, the Council stated that though no official confirmation has been received from the government, growing speculation in media and social platforms has rekindled anticipation among the people. For the past two years, the Zomi community has waited for national recognition of their suffering and struggles during the ongoing ethnic and political crisis in Manipur.

Zomi Council Welcomes Possible PM Visit, Hopes for Turning Point

“If the august visit by the PM truly happens, we would extend a warm and sincere welcome,” the statement read, calling the possible visit a symbolic act of national acknowledgment of the “grief, endurance and quiet strength” of the Zomi people.

The Council described how various dialogues over the past years - mainly at the advisory level - have failed to yield concrete political relief, and called the potential visit by the Prime Minister not just a symbolic gesture but a moment for inclusive healing. “Such a visit from the Head of Government will mark an inclusive turning point - not just for show, but in taking decisive action to heal and kindle hope,” it said.

The Zomi Council further reiterated its willingness to work “hand in hand” with the government to restore peace, stability, and build a better future for the affected people. It also urged the central government to treat the proposed visit as an opportunity to address the “rampaging situation” in the state and to pursue a meaningful political resolution.

The statement concluded with a poignant reminder: “Let it be remembered as a moment when the nation turned its face towards the communal purging which plagued Manipur since May 3, 2023.”

The Zomi Council is the apex body representing several Zomi tribal organizations in Manipur and has been actively advocating for justice, rehabilitation, and long-term political solutions in the wake of ethnic violence and displacement across the state.
