Mizo Students’ Union Protest Govt Appointment of Unqualified Teachers

Aizawl, July 7, 2025: The Mizo Students’ Union (MSU) today staged a major demonstration under the banner of “Quality Education Humhalhna Kawng Zawh” in Aizawl, demanding the removal of unqualified part-time assistant professors appointed under contract by the Higher & Technical Education Department of the state government.

Led by MSU’s General Headquarters, hundreds of students from various colleges in Aizawl marched from Vanapa Hall to the Directorate Office of Higher & Technical Education, voicing their opposition to what they termed as a threat to the quality of higher education in Mizoram.

Student leaders stated that the appointment of unqualified teaching staff severely undermines the academic environment and hampers the future of students. They stressed the urgent need to uphold standards in education and ensure that only eligible and competent candidates are appointed to teaching roles.

The protest also saw strong support from the Aizawl City College Joint Students' Union, with many students expressing deep concern over the government’s decision. Protesters called on the Mizoram government to immediately cancel the contracts of unqualified part-time assistant professors and prioritize the recruitment of properly qualified educators.

MSU further asserted that this movement was not politically motivated but rooted in the students’ genuine desire to protect and uplift the standard of education in the state.
