Aizawl, June 23, 2025: A recent study by the Samaritan Society of Mizoram has shed light on the growing issue of female sex work in the state capital, revealing that 80% of the women involved in sex work in Aizawl originally come from outside the city.
The study, which surveyed 430 women currently engaged in sex work, found that most of them migrated to Aizawl in search of better employment opportunities. However, many were unable to find suitable work and eventually turned to sex work for survival. The majority of these women are between 18 and 45 years of age, with the largest group (41%) aged 18 to 23. A small but notable number of women over 50 are also involved in the trade.
The findings also highlighted the difficult personal and economic conditions that pushed many into sex work. A significant number are separated or divorced and lack stable family or financial support. Approximately 90% come from broken homes, often marked by alcohol abuse and neglect by parents or guardians.
Disturbingly, 6% of those surveyed were victims of sexual abuse during childhood, often perpetrated by family members or relatives. Many cited substance dependency - including alcohol, drugs, and gambling - as a reason for entering or continuing in the trade.

In terms of health risks, the study revealed that 32% of the sex workers tested were HIV positive, with unprotected sex being the primary cause. Many clients reportedly refuse to use condoms, and some even offer more money to avoid protection. As a result, both the women and their clients remain at high risk of infection.
The report further noted the widespread use of intoxicants among the women, including alcohol, ganja, heroin, and pills, compounding both health and social concerns.
