Shillong, June 24, 2025: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has extended his appreciation to Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma for presenting a piece of Ryndia silk, calling it a symbol of Meghalaya’s rich cultural heritage and a reflection of sustainable, ethical production.
In a letter addressed to CM Sangma, the Prime Minister described the gesture as “touching and deeply appreciated.” He noted that in today’s world, products like Ryndia - which is Meghalaya’s GI-tagged Eri silk, handwoven by women weavers of Ri-Bhoi district - stand out for their eco-friendly and socially responsible values.
“The grant of the GI tag to Ryndia is yet another step that reiterates our resolve to promote such products on the global stage,” PM Modi stated.
The Prime Minister emphasized the importance of highlighting indigenous products like Ryndia Silk as part of India’s growing commitment to sustainability and cultural pride. He also praised the warmth and hospitality of the people of Meghalaya and the potential of its youth, calling them integral to the vision of Viksit Bharat.

Responding to the gesture on social media, CM Conrad Sangma thanked the Prime Minister for his recognition of Ryndia and acknowledged the efforts of designer KINIHO for creatively reinterpreting Meghalaya’s textile heritage.
“Grateful to the Hon’ble Prime Minister… for recognizing Ryndia - Meghalaya’s GI-tagged Eri silk, handwoven by Ri-Bhoi District’s women weavers,” Sangma tweeted.
