Shillong, June 25, 2025: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Tuesday inaugurated the Williamson Sangma Meghalaya State Museum at the U Soso Tham Auditorium premises in Shillong. The museum is dedicated to showcasing the state’s rich cultural legacy and honoring the leaders of the Hill State Movement.
Speaking at the inaugural event, CM Sangma described the museum as a “vibrant attestation to the spirit of Meghalaya”, highlighting its role in celebrating the state’s diverse traditions, indigenous artifacts, distinctive fabrics, and cultural resilience.
“It is a tribute to our proud heritage, reflecting the resilience of our past and the promise of our future,” the Chief Minister stated.

The museum is named in honor of Captain Williamson A. Sangma, the first Chief Minister of Meghalaya and a key figure in the Hill State Movement that led to the formation of the state in 1972. The new institution not only preserves the cultural history of Meghalaya but also serves as a memorial to the pioneers of its political identity.
CM Sangma emphasized that the museum would become a center for learning, identity, and pride for the people of Meghalaya and the wider Northeast.
