Aizawl, June 24, 2025: In a key infrastructure review meeting held today, Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma met with PWD Minister Vanlalhlana and senior engineers of the Public Works Department (PWD) to discuss proposals for significant road upgrades across Aizawl city.
During the meeting, PWD Minister Vanlalhlana highlighted the long-standing need for critical road expansion and improvement projects in Aizawl. However, due to high costs, many of these plans have remained unimplemented over the years. He noted that the new proposals focus on three vital stretches of the city’s road network that could be developed at more manageable costs.
Key Proposals Discussed:
1. Tunnel from State Guest House to Ramhlun
A tunnel is proposed from the State Guest House via Chaltlang Road connecting to Ramhlun Main Road and Ramhlun Lower Road. This would link with the Bawngkawn Police Station stretch of the National Highway, helping ease the growing traffic congestion between the city center and the highway.
Estimated cost: ₹25 crore
2. Viaduct from Bawngkawn to Brigade Veng
The second proposal includes a viaduct beginning above the Hrangbana Filling Station and extending towards Brigade Veng, following the model of the Serchhip Bypass road. It would span 150 meters in length and 49 meters in height, offering a cost-effective solution for traffic flow in the area.
Estimated cost: ₹30 crore
3. Vaivakawn Road Widening and Redevelopment
The third major proposal focuses on expanding the Vaivakawn junction area. It includes a bypass starting from beneath the Cultural Centre, passing through the YMA ground, and connecting to the existing bazaar road. The plan aims to decongest Vaivakawn Bazar and ease pedestrian and vehicle movement.
Estimated cost: ₹40 crore
The Bawngkawn road segment, noted as the most congested in Aizawl, sees daily traffic of over 50,000 vehicles, while Vaivakawn’s road handles around 30,000.

Although the specific funding sources were not finalized during the meeting, department officials discussed possible financing options and emphasized the urgent need to address these traffic bottlenecks. The proposals will undergo further scrutiny before any formal budget allocation.
These initiatives aim to modernize Aizawl’s traffic infrastructure and provide long-term relief to commuters across the capital city.
