Agartala, June 16, 2025: In a major crackdown on cross-border smuggling, the Assam Rifles seized a large consignment of foreign-origin cigarettes worth an estimated ₹5.1 crore near the Chandrapur area of Agartala, Tripura, on Sunday night.
Acting on specific intelligence inputs, the security personnel launched a targeted operation near the Indo-Bangladesh border. The troops successfully intercepted 170 cartons of banned foreign-brand cigarettes, suspected to have been smuggled into India through illicit cross-border trade routes.
The seized contraband was immediately handed over to the Customs Department for further investigation and initiation of legal proceedings.
A senior official of Assam Rifles stated that the operation is part of the force’s ongoing efforts to curb illegal cross-border trade and protect India’s economic security. The official emphasized the importance of intelligence-led and coordinated operations in preventing contraband influx into the country.
