Silchar, June 3, 2025: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma visited flood-hit areas of Cachar district on Tuesday, meeting residents taking shelter in relief camps and reviewing ongoing government efforts to tackle the crisis.
In a series of updates, the Chief Minister acknowledged the use of many schools in Silchar as shelter homes for flood-affected families. At Hiron Prova Dev Shishu Mandir, a school established in 1980, he announced that the government will provide free textbooks for students and address other needs “in a time and process-bound manner.”
Sarma also said the government is working to resolve chronic drainage issues in Silchar, taking inspiration from the Bharalu pumping station model in Guwahati. Addressing infrastructure concerns, he confirmed that the Gammon Bridge, a key structure in the region, is scheduled to reopen by July 20.
Highlighting the challenges at the Sinking Zone near Tarapur, the CM noted that even after casting nine piles, stable soil hasn't been located at depths up to 400 feet. He has directed officials to explore alternative solutions after the bridge reopens.
