Silchar, June 10, 2025, Virthli: Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma visited Hmarkhawlien village in Cachar district, Barak Valley, today to meet with local farmers and Hmar community leaders, acknowledging their significant contributions to the region’s agricultural progress. The visit underscores the state government’s commitment to supporting rural communities and fostering development in Barak Valley.

During his visit, CM Sarma interacted with the dedicated farmers of Hmarkhawlien, praising their hard work and commitment to agricultural excellence. He highlighted their role in driving economic growth in the region, emphasizing the importance of their efforts in strengthening Assam’s agrarian landscape. The Chief Minister also engaged with esteemed Hmar community leaders, discussing initiatives to further enhance agricultural productivity and improve local infrastructure.

Present at the meeting were Dr. Lalthomlien Nietham, Chairman of the Barak Valley Hill Tribes Development Council, and Lalsiemthar Hmar, the newly elected Anchalik Panchayat (AP) member. Both expressed their heartfelt gratitude to the Chief Minister for his visit and for taking note of the challenges faced by farmers in Barak Valley. They appreciated his proactive approach to addressing the needs of the region’s agricultural community and fostering inclusive development.

The Hmar leaders also met the Chief Secretary and the Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister separately and informed them about the Indian Freedom Fighter HK Bawisuok. They shared his life story and requested that his name be honored among the recognized freedom fighters at Jorhat Jail. In response, the Chief Secretary of Assam, Mr. Ravi Kota, IAS, stated that this is a timely and important matter, and that appropriate steps will be taken.

The visit comes amidst ongoing efforts by the Assam government to bolster infrastructure and socio-economic development in Barak Valley. Recent initiatives in the region include the foundation stone-laying for the Silghat Bridge over the Barak River and the establishment of the Borjalenga Model Degree College, aimed at improving connectivity and educational access.
