Naharlagun, June 10, 2025: In a landmark achievement for healthcare in Arunachal Pradesh, the Tomo Riba Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (TRIHMS) has successfully conducted the first-ever Bi-Jaw Orthognathic Surgery in the state. The complex procedure corrects severe jaw misalignments and is typically available only in advanced metropolitan medical centers.

The surgery involved two major procedures: a LeFort I osteotomy of the upper jaw and a Bilateral Sagittal Split Osteotomy (BSSO) of the lower jaw. Collectively referred to as Bi-Jaw Surgery, it realigns both jaws for improved facial aesthetics, speech, chewing, and breathing- especially for patients suffering from skeletal malocclusion and jaw asymmetry.

The case was meticulously planned by Dr. Hibu Dora, Orthodontist at TRIHMS, who led the digital orthodontic evaluations and pre-operative setup. The surgery was performed by Dr. Luksi Jilen, Assistant Professor in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, with surgical support from Dr. Rime Ngulom Pottom and Dr. Tagat Taggu.

“This is a proud moment for our institution and for the people of Arunachal Pradesh,” said Dr. Jilen. “We’ve shown that such sophisticated procedures can be carried out locally, eliminating the need for costly treatment in cities like Delhi or Mumbai.”

Orthognathic surgeries like this typically cost several lakhs in private hospitals. With TRIHMS offering the same procedure at significantly reduced costs, the institute is now emerging as a regional center for advanced jaw and facial correction surgeries in Northeast India.

This medical milestone highlights the growing expertise at TRIHMS and underlines the state’s commitment to bringing affordable, high-quality healthcare to its people.
