Imphal, May 13, 2025, Virthli (ONP): In a concerted effort to bolster humanitarian assistance for children affected by ongoing ethnic unrest in Manipur, Dr. Madhulika Jonathan, Chief of Field Office for UNICEF Assam and the Northeastern States, met with Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla at Raj Bhavan today. The meeting focused on enhancing support for internally displaced persons (IDPs), particularly children residing in relief camps across the state.
During the discussion, Dr. Jonathan briefed the Governor on UNICEF's ongoing initiatives in the region, including vaccination and immunization campaigns aimed at improving child health in affected areas. She also highlighted the distribution of educational and sports kits to IDPs, underscoring UNICEF's commitment to addressing both the immediate and long-term needs of displaced children.
The Governor commended UNICEF's dedicated efforts and assured continued support from the state government to facilitate their humanitarian work. Dr. Jonathan also sought the Governor’s assistance in addressing certain financial challenges to ensure the sustainability of these initiatives.
UNICEF has been actively collaborating with the Government of Manipur since 2019, providing technical support aimed at ending preventable maternal, newborn, and child deaths. Their efforts encompass program management, community engagement, capacity building of healthcare workers, and support in planning and policy formulation.
The ethnic conflict that erupted in May 2023 has led to significant displacement, with children being among the most vulnerable. A study conducted in Churachandpur district revealed that many displaced children face challenges such as trauma, lack of access to education, and inadequate healthcare facilities.
UNICEF's initiatives aim to address these challenges by ensuring that displaced children receive essential services and support, facilitating their integration into new communities, and promoting their overall well-being.
