Speaking at the event, the Chief Minister underscored the economic and environmental potential of bamboo in Mizoram. He highlighted bamboo’s rapid growth cycle and sustainability compared to traditional wood sources, especially in charcoal production. “Bamboo regenerates within one to two years, making it a more eco-friendly and renewable resource. This initiative will not only boost local employment but also help conserve our forests,” he said.

He further stressed the importance of maintaining operational efficiency at the new facilities and called on the staff to ensure the longevity and success of the units.

Horticulture Minister Pu C. Lalsawivunga called the development a “new chapter” in bamboo utilization in the state, emphasizing Mizoram’s rich bamboo reserves and the potential for sustainable industrial use.

A technical overview was presented by Pu C.H. Lalmuanpuia, Director of Horticulture and Missions Director for the State Bamboo Mission. He noted that the Bamboo Treatment and Seasoning Plant would significantly extend the durability of bamboo products, with treated materials expected to last up to 50 years. The Activated Charcoal Unit is capable of producing three tonnes of charcoal per day, requiring around 670 bamboo culms daily, and will also generate approximately 100 litres of vinegar per day as a byproduct - up to 54 litres of which can be distilled into refined vinegar.

Bamboo supply for the units will be sourced from three existing clusters located in Chhingchhip, Baktawng, and Saiphal villages.
