Shillong, May 14, 2025, Virthli (ON): The Jaintia Students’ Union (JSU) has formally urged the Meghalaya government to declare Jowai as the state's Summer Capital, citing geographic, climatic, and administrative advantages of the town.

In a memorandum submitted to Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, JSU leaders argued that establishing a seasonal administrative base in Jowai would not only ease governance but also promote equitable development across regions. The student body emphasized that Jowai, located in the West Jaintia Hills, offers a cooler climate and strategic location conducive to functioning as a summer administrative hub.

The union also pointed out that a summer capital in Jowai would help decentralize administrative concentration from Shillong, promote infrastructure growth in the Jaintia region, and encourage tourism and economic activity.

“Such a move will bridge developmental gaps between the Khasi and Jaintia regions and provide better access to government services for the people of East and West Jaintia Hills,” said a JSU spokesperson.
