Manipur MLA Dares Police to Apply Law Equally Amid FIR on KSO Delhi President

VIRTHLI

Tuiṭhaphai, May 17, 2025, Virthli (ONP): Saikot MLA Paolienlal Haokip has strongly criticized the Manipur Police for what he calls "selective" application of the law, following the filing of an FIR against Paojakhup Guite, President of the Kuki Students' Organisation (KSO) Delhi-NCR.

Guite is facing legal action over a viral video in which he allegedly urged Meitei people not to cross the buffer zone to attend the upcoming Shirui Festival in Ukhrul. In a public statement on social media, Manipur Police confirmed that the Churachandpur Police have registered an FIR and launched efforts for Guite’s immediate arrest, including raids in nearby districts. Police in neighbouring states of Mizoram, Assam, Nagaland, and Meghalaya have been requested to assist.

Reacting to the police action, Paolienlal Haokip tweeted, “Let equal strict application of law manifest itself in all similar instances past, present and future. I dare the ‘Manipur Police’ and I’ll laud them.”

In a more pointed Facebook post, Haokip accused the state of legal double standards: “The law should apply equally and not selectively. It is such disparity in application of law where numerous and more virulent, inciting utterances in Imphal valley were turned a Nelson’s eye, and suo motu action taken when it comes from the Kuki-Zo that has separated the state.”

He further stated that the only "sane way forward" is to recognize the "de facto separation" of communities in Manipur under the Constitution.

The incident and ensuing reactions have intensified ongoing ethnic and political tensions in the state, where trust in government institutions has been eroded by over a year of violent conflict and unresolved grievances between the Meitei and Kuki-Zomi-Hmar communities.
