Imphal, May 22, 2025, Virthli (ONP): Justice Kempaiah Somashekar was sworn in as the ninth Chief Justice of the Manipur High Court today. The oath of office was administered by Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla during a ceremony held at Raj Bhavan in Imphal.
Justice Somashekar's appointment follows the retirement of Justice D. Krishnakumar on May 21, 2025. The Supreme Court Collegium, led by Chief Justice of India Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai, recommended his elevation on May 15, 2025, which was subsequently approved by the President of India.
Prior to this appointment, Justice Somashekar served as a judge at the Karnataka High Court. He began his legal career in 1990, practicing in Mysore and Chamarajanagar districts. In 1998, he was directly appointed as a District and Sessions Judge, serving in various capacities across Karnataka. He was elevated to the Karnataka High Court bench as an additional judge in November 2016 and became a permanent judge in November 2018.

The swearing-in ceremony was attended by judges of the Manipur High Court, judicial officers, and representatives from the Bar Association.
Justice Somashekar's tenure is anticipated to bring continued diligence and integrity to the Manipur High Court.
