ATM Heist in Meghalaya: Over ₹28 Lakh Stolen from SBI Kiosk in East Khasi Hills

Shillong, May 22, 2025, Virthli (ONP): In a significant security breach, unidentified individuals looted over ₹28.13 lakh from a State Bank of India (SBI) ATM located in Mawkriah, East Khasi Hills district, during the early hours of Wednesday. 

According to law enforcement officials, the incident occurred around 2:43 AM. Surveillance footage reveals four masked individuals using a gas cutter to forcibly access the ATM machine. The method employed closely resembles techniques observed in recent ATM thefts in Assam, leading authorities to suspect the involvement of an interstate criminal gang.

Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem stated that the coordinated nature of the operation suggests the perpetrators may have prior experience with similar crimes. A case has been registered at the Mawngap Police Station, and efforts are underway to identify and apprehend the culprits. 

This incident has raised concerns about the security measures in place at ATM facilities across the region. Authorities are urging banks to enhance surveillance and implement stricter security protocols to prevent such occurrences in the future.
