Kohima, May 14, 2025, Virthli (ONP): In a significant move, multiple trade bodies across Nagaland have jointly announced an indefinite shutdown of all business activities starting May 19. The decision comes in response to growing concerns over unresolved issues impacting the state's commercial and trading environment.
According to the Confederation of Nagaland Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CNCCI) and affiliated district-level organizations, the strike is a collective protest against persistent challenges such as unchecked extortion, threats to business owners, and what they term as the state government’s failure to ensure a safe and conducive business atmosphere.
The business community has long complained of harassment and financial pressure from various groups operating with impunity. Despite repeated appeals and discussions with the authorities, the situation reportedly remains unchanged, prompting this drastic step.
“This is not a decision we take lightly. We are being pushed to the wall. The safety, dignity, and survival of traders are at stake,” stated a representative of the CNCCI during a press briefing.
The shutdown is expected to affect markets, shops, and business establishments across urban and rural areas of Nagaland. However, the trade bodies clarified that essential services such as hospitals and pharmacies will be exempted.
