Guwahati, May 20, 2025, Virthli (ONP): Under the firm leadership of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Assam has intensified its crackdown on drug trafficking through its ongoing mission, Assam Against Drugs, leading to significant breakthroughs in the fight against narcotics in the region.
Since the launch of this initiative in 2021, Assam Police have registered 12,398 cases under the NDPS Act and arrested a staggering 20,293 individuals involved in drug-related crimes. The total estimated value of drugs seized or destroyed has crossed an astounding ₹2,604.21 crore.
Taking to social media, CM Sarma stated, “Since 2021, we have taken a firm stand against the menace of drugs. Under our Mission Assam Against Drugs, we have seized over ₹2600 crore of various drugs and arrested over 20,000 people to contribute to the overall vision of a Drugs Free Bharat.”
Major Drug Recoveries Include:
• Heroin: 553 kg
• Crystal Methamphetamine: 24 kg
• Tablets/Capsules: 1.61 crore units
• Codeine-Based Cough Syrup: 12.44 lakh bottles
• Ganja (Marijuana): 1.25 lakh kg
• Opium: 621 kg
• Poppy Straw: 3,324 kg
• Cash Seized: ₹6.85 crore
The crackdown has been widely lauded for its effectiveness and intensity, with law enforcement conducting large-scale operations and community outreach to raise awareness.

The state government reiterates its commitment to making Assam and by extension, India a drug-free society by tackling the drug trade at every level and supporting de-addiction and rehabilitation efforts for affected individuals.
