Imphal, August 02 2011: The Government of Manipur has been seriously considering the demand for upgrading Sadar Hills and Jiribam into full fledged districts as well as the feasibility of bifurcating Ukhrul and Churachandpur into two districts each.
This was stated by Chief Minister Okram Ibobi during a press meet in his Cabinet room this afternoon.
Stating that the Government has been seriously considering to convert Jiribam and Sadar Hills into full fledged districts, the Chief Minister, however, informed that he could not give any definite timeline for the same process.
The Government has also been examining the possible negative effects as and when the districts demands are conceded.
The demand to upgrade Sadar Hills to a district dates back decades.
The Government is also looking into the feasibility of bifurcating Ukhrul district into Ukhrul South and Ukhrul North, and separation of Thanlon and Tipaimukh from Churchandpur district to form a new district, Ibobi stated.
He also warned that the Government would not remain silent if there is more violence against free transportation of essential commodities along highways.
