Shillong, September 27: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma highlighted the state’s growing appeal as a top tourist destination during the closing ceremony of the World Tourism Day celebrations in Shillong.

Sharing the impressive growth trend, the Chief Minister noted that Meghalaya welcomed more than 14 lakh domestic tourists in 2023, which rose to 16 lakh in 2024, marking a steady rise in visitors to the state. He further added that international tourist arrivals also showed a sharp increase, reaching 2.3 lakh in 2024.

“This steady rise in both domestic and international visitors is a testament to Meghalaya’s unique natural beauty, cultural richness, and improving infrastructure that makes the state an increasingly sought-after destination,” Sangma said.

The celebrations concluded with cultural performances and interactions with stakeholders from the tourism sector. Officials reiterated that the state government is committed to sustainable tourism practices while enhancing facilities for travelers.

The surge in numbers reflects not just Meghalaya’s breathtaking landscapes and vibrant heritage, but also the government’s initiatives in promoting eco-tourism, improving connectivity, and creating new experiences for visitors.
