Senapati, June 3, 2025, Virthli: The All Naga Students’ Association, Manipur (ANSAM) today announced the successful conclusion of its 48-hour government office picketing campaign in the Naga Hills districts. The protest, held on June 2 and 3, was aimed at expressing strong opposition to the scrapping of the Free Movement Regime (FMR) and the construction of border fencing in Naga areas.
In a press statement issued by ANSAM President Th. Angteshang Maring and General Secretary Isaac Charenamei, the association declared that while the office picketing has ended, their movement will persist until the Government of India fully halts border fencing activities and reinstates the FMR in Naga homeland.
Describing the protest as a “strong and united display of civil resistance,” ANSAM highlighted that its constituent and subordinate units, with support from the United Naga Council (UNC), Naga Women’s Union (NWU), civil society groups, and concerned citizens, had successfully carried out peaceful demonstrations across the region.
The statement criticized the central government's decision on February 8, 2024, to scrap the FMR and begin fencing the Indo-Myanmar border, describing it as a direct threat to the traditional free movement and cultural ties of the Naga people. ANSAM warned against what it termed an “attempt to isolate communities through artificial borders.”
