Shillong, June 13, 2025: In a strategic move to boost tourism and monetize idle government assets, the Meghalaya Cabinet has approved the repurposing of 273.41 acres of unused land belonging to the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) for tourism development.

Announcing the decision, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma said the land will be leased to the Tourism Department on a revenue-sharing model, paving the way for various tourism-related infrastructure projects aimed at enhancing the state’s appeal as a travel destination.

Key areas identified for development include the IB campus, land from Le-junction to Nongsdier village, plots behind the MeECL school and NHRDC, Block V, and the picturesque Lumpongdeng Island.

The government sees this initiative as a dual opportunity - to unlock the economic potential of unutilized public land and to significantly improve the tourism ecosystem in Meghalaya. The planned projects are expected to create employment, generate revenue, and offer improved amenities for visitors and locals alike.
