Imphal, June 7, 2025: In a significant boost to agricultural innovation, the Hon’ble Governor of Manipur, Shri Ajay Kumar Bhalla, today officially released ‘RC Manichakhao-1’, the state’s first High-Yielding Variety (HYV) of Black Rice (Chakhao). The launch event was held at Raj Bhavan, in collaboration with the ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Manipur Centre.
Developed by ICAR scientists, this breakthrough variety doubles the yield compared to traditional Chakhao strains, improves cooking quality, and contains enhanced levels of anthocyanin, a health-boosting antioxidant. The new HYV is expected to benefit both farmers through increased productivity and consumers through superior nutritional value.
Dr. Konsam Sarika, Scientist at ICAR Manipur Centre, along with other officials, briefed the Governor on the innovation, emphasizing its potential to transform the state’s black rice cultivation and promote sustainable agricultural development in Manipur.
