Lunglei, June 2, 2025, Virthli: In a significant move towards urban cleanliness and public health, Mizoram Health & Family Welfare Minister Pi Lalrinpuii today formally launched the Garbage Free City Lunglei Project under the Lunglei Municipal Council (LMC). The launch event was held at the Lunglei Convention Centre.
Addressing the gathering, Pi Lalrinpuii commended the LMC for its initiative and stressed the vital role of collective responsibility in building a cleaner, healthier town. She highlighted that women and households are central to this mission and emphasized the importance of plastic reduction, proper waste segregation, and community awareness in achieving sustainable sanitation.
The Minister also underscored the government's broader commitment to healthcare and the welfare of marginalized communities, noting initiatives such as Mipui Healthcare Scheme (MUHCS) to support those requiring medical assistance without financial burden.
The launch event saw the presence of Lunglei South MLA Pu Lalramliana Papuia, LMC Chairman Pu Lalzuithanga, Executive Councillor Pu Zorinsanga Hmar, and representatives from various civil society groups including YMA, MHIP, MUP, MJA, as well as students and political leaders.
The LMC's sanitation-focused approach is supported by the Local Administration Department (LAD) and the Urban Development & Poverty Alleviation (UD&PA) department. Following the introduction of the LMC Award in 2024 for the cleanest wards, the council’s Municipal Sanitation Committee approved this project in May 2025.
As a pilot, the project will begin in four award-winning wards (Nos. 1, 2, 9, and 11) covering nine local councils such as Pukpui, Zotlang, Serkawn, and Zobawk. A budget of ₹60 lakhs has been allocated for the initial phase. The project will expand gradually to other wards over the next two years.
This multi-stakeholder initiative includes cleanliness drives, educational campaigns, waste management training, formation of community squads, and school-based awareness programs to ensure long-term success.
The project sets a precedent for participatory governance in urban sanitation, aligning with Mizoram’s vision of a cleaner, greener future.
