Governor Discusses Mizoram Ropeway Project with MoRTH, NHLML and UD&PA Officials

Aizawl, June 17, 2025: The Governor of Mizoram, General (Dr) Vijay Kumar Singh (Retd.), convened a crucial meeting at the Raj Bhavan with key officials from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), National Highways Logistics Management Limited (NHLML), and the Urban Development & Poverty Alleviation (UD&PA) Department, to deliberate on the implementation of a ropeway project under the Parvatmala Pariyojana, a national ropeway development initiative.

Emphasizing the need for continued urban expansion, the Governor stated that in addition to Aizawl city, ropeway connectivity should be considered in other locations as well, given the geographical challenges and traffic congestion in hilly regions. He underscored the importance of inclusive planning and public engagement for effective implementation and long-term sustainability.

Mr. Vinay Kumar, Additional Secretary of MoRTH, confirmed the Centre’s support and mentioned that the Parvatmala initiative, successfully implemented in other hilly states, has generated substantial revenue, with up to 90% of returns contributing to local development.

UD&PA Secretary Pu Lalmalsawma Pachuau presented a detailed PowerPoint overview of the proposed ropeway corridors under the Aizawl Sustainable Urban Transport Project (ASUTP). The presentation outlined a Comprehensive Mobility Plan for the 280 sq. km Aizawl urban area, which includes: Ropeways, Improved pedestrian pathways, Regional truck and bus terminals, and Enhanced public transportation systems.

The meeting also saw participation from Pu Ajit Roy, Secretary to the Governor; Pu Jacob Lalawmpuia, Director, UD&PA; and Mr. Prashant Jain, Vice President of NHLML.

The collaborative session highlighted the state's intent to harness modern transport solutions for sustainable and inclusive urban growth, with ropeways positioned as a strategic intervention for improving mobility in Mizoram’s hilly terrain.
