Aizawl District Magistrate Bans Illegal Animal Blood Sports

Aizawl, June 25, 2025: The District Magistrate of Aizawl, Er. Lalhriatpuia, IAS, has issued an immediate and comprehensive ban on animal blood sports that involve pooled monetary betting, citing mounting concerns over animal cruelty and breaches of legal statutes. The order, which comes into effect across the entire Aizawl District, marks a decisive step by the administration to curb practices that have long drawn public condemnation.

Aizawl District Magistrate Bans Commercialized Animal Blood Sports

District authorities have reported that gatherings of 100 to 300 individuals routinely participate in organized animal fighting events, primarily involving pigs and chickens. Participants are required to contribute money, with the events serving both as entertainment and as a form of gambling. These activities have generated significant public outcry, prompting urgent calls for intervention.

The recent order explicitly references Section 11(1)(l)(m)(ii) of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, which strictly prohibits the organization or promotion of animal fights and the infliction of unnecessary pain or suffering on animals for the purposes of entertainment or profit. The administration has warned that any violation of the order will result in strict legal action.
