Imphal, June 15, 2025: In a historic and emotional moment, Air India officially ceased its direct operations at Imphal International Airport today, marking the end of an era that spanned decades and symbolized national pride and connectivity for the people of Manipur.

The final Air India flight took off on Saturday, with airport staff and airline employees tearfully waving goodbye as the iconic red-and-white aircraft departed. Described as the “Big Brother” in a heartfelt Facebook post by the Imphal Airport, the carrier’s exit was likened to a family member bidding farewell - evoking deep nostalgia and sentiment among aviation staff and the general public.

“Your absence will be felt, but your legacy will remain etched in the heart of Manipur and in the skies you helped bridge,” the Airport Authority of India (AAI) stated in tribute.

Air India’s exit is part of a long-planned strategic transition by the Tata Group, which now owns the airline. Its wholly-owned subsidiary, Air India Express (AIX), will continue services to and from Imphal as part of the Tata Group’s two-brand structure. While Air India shifts its focus to metro and international routes, AIX will expand its presence in regional and Tier 2/3 cities, including Imphal.

For decades, Air India served as a crucial bridge between Manipur and the rest of the country. From the holiday rush and crowded terminals to its courteous crew and consistent service, the airline has left an indelible mark on the state’s travel history and economic development.

As the aircraft taxied for its final departure, onlookers noted it casting "one last look" at the new terminal and ATS complex- a symbolic gesture of blessing and farewell. Meanwhile, AIX, portrayed as the “younger brother,” stood ready to carry forward the legacy.

The Airport Authority and citizens alike expressed gratitude for Air India’s decades-long service, acknowledging its pivotal role in shaping Manipur’s connectivity with the nation.
