Imphal, June 8, 2025, Virthli: A delegation of 25 Members of the Legislative Assembly from various parties, including the BJP, NPP, and Congress, met the Governor of Manipur on Saturday to express concern over the arrest of Asem Kanan, widely believed to be associated with the Arambai Tenggol outfit. The meeting comes amid escalating protests and widespread public unrest in the valley districts.
Following the meeting, BJP Manipur spokesperson and MLA Kh Ibomcha Singh informed the media that the Governor clarified Kanan's arrest was not related to his alleged affiliation with Arambai Tenggol. Instead, he was detained by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in connection with a separate case, the details of which remain undisclosed due to an ongoing investigation.
MLA Lokeswore of Khundrakpam also confirmed that Asem Kanan was flown to New Delhi on Saturday morning aboard Indigo flight 6A2008 for further proceedings. The four others detained alongside him, reportedly members of Arambai Tenggol, were arrested by state police and are expected to be released shortly if no serious charges are established.
The legislators urged the Governor to facilitate Kanan’s release, citing the sensitive situation in the state. Tensions have remained high since his detention, with street protests, road blockades, and a growing public outcry across the valley.
In response to the deteriorating law-and-order situation, the state government has enforced prohibitory orders in five valley districts and imposed a five-day suspension of mobile internet and data services to curb the spread of misinformation.
Further intensifying the crisis, Arambai Tenggol has announced a 10-day total shutdown, calling for the closure of all government offices and public services, plunging the region into deeper uncertainty.
