Imphal, June 8, 2025: Imphal plunged into unrest late Saturday night following the reported arrest of Kanan Singh, the self-styled Army Chief of the Meitei militia group Arambai Tenggol, by security forces. The arrest has triggered widespread protests and street demonstrations across key areas of the city, especially in Uripok and Kwakeithel.
Eyewitnesses reported that the situation rapidly escalated, with protestors taking to the streets shouting slogans like “We are also Indian, we are not terrorists, we are civilians. Arrest us all, release Army Chief Kanan!” Some demonstrators even attempted self-immolation in a dramatic protest against the government’s move. The group is demanding Singh’s immediate release and warning that his continued detention may further inflame tensions.
Multiple gunshots were reportedly heard in Kwakeithel, and injuries - including that of a journalist -have been alleged, although official confirmation is still awaited. The atmosphere in the city remains tense with increased deployment of security personnel and curbs in several sensitive areas.
