Union Minister George Kurian Visits Mizoram, Reviews Fisheries Sector Development

Aizawl, May 24, 2025, Virthli (ONP): Union Minister of State for Minority Affairs and Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying, Pu George Kurian, arrived in Aizawl today on an official visit. He was received at Lengpui Airport by Mizoram Fisheries Minister Pu Lalthansanga, Fisheries Department Secretary Er. Lalrothanga, Director Pi Laltleipuii, and other senior officials.

During his visit, the Minister inspected key fisheries development sites including the North Eastern Council-supported Fish Farmers' Training Centre and Laldenga Fisheries Demonstration Farm. Officials briefed him on the challenges faced by fish farmers in remote areas and requested central assistance for state-led projects, including the proposed Integrated Aqua Park at Zawlnuam.

Highlighting the Union Government’s commitment, Pu Kurian announced support through the Fish Farmers Producer Organisation (FFPO) and emphasized the availability of Equity Grants to ease financial hardships. He also addressed the issue of fish feed shortages and encouraged the development of localized feed production and entrepreneurship through startups.

The Minister underlined the importance of outreach programs and assured that officers would soon be deployed to address field-level issues. Acknowledging Mizoram’s progress, he praised the state’s significant involvement in fisheries, with 26.5% utilization of the potential 24,000-hectare development area.

Later, Pu Kurian visited the newly established Ornamental Fish Sales Outlet at Khatla under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY). The scheme aims to drive India’s Blue Revolution by promoting sustainable fish production, market expansion, and enhanced livelihoods for fish farmers.

The Minister was also welcomed by members of the Mizoram Volleyball Association and is scheduled to watch a Pro Volleyball League match at LPS Arena before departing for New Delhi tomorrow.
