Himanta Sarma Flags Concerns Over Congress MP’s Foreign Engagement

VIRTHLI

Guwahati, May 17, 2025, Virthli (ONP): A political controversy has erupted after Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma raised serious concerns over the inclusion of a Congress MP in an official delegation tasked with representing India’s stance on terrorism sponsored from Pakistan.

Taking to social media, Sarma alleged that one of the MPs named in the Congress list reportedly from Assam had spent an extended period in Pakistan and that credible documents indicate his wife was receiving a salary from a Pakistan-based NGO while residing in India.

"One of the MPs named in the list (from Assam) has not denied his prolonged stay in Pakistan - reportedly for two weeks - and credible documents show that his wife was drawing salary from a Pakistan-based NGO while working in India," Sarma wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

“In the interest of national security and beyond partisan politics, I urge leader of opposition Sri Rahul Gandhi not to include this individual in such a sensitive and strategic assignment,” the Chief Minister added.

The controversy stems from a statement by Congress leader Jairam Ramesh, who earlier disclosed that the party had submitted four names for a government-led delegation being sent abroad to present India’s position on cross-border terrorism. The names submitted by the Congress included senior leaders Anand Sharma, Gaurav Gogoi, Syed Naseer Hussain, and Raja Brar.

The allegation is widely seen as a veiled reference to Gaurav Gogoi, MP from Assam and Deputy Leader of the Congress in the Lok Sabha, although no names were directly mentioned by Sarma. As of now, there has been no official response from the Congress party or the MPs named.
