COCOMI Declares 48-Hour Manipur Bandh; Demands Governor’s Apology

VIRTHLI

Imphal, May 21, 2025, Virthli (ONP): The Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) has announced a 48-hour total shutdown across Manipur, beginning Wednesday, in strong protest against the Indian Army’s removal of the word “Manipur” from a state-owned bus heading to the Shirui Lily Festival. The committee condemned the action as “deeply insulting” and “unacceptable,” demanding a public apology from Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla and the resignation of the Chief Secretary, Director General of Police (DGP), and Security Advisor.

The bus, which was reportedly part of a convoy en route to the ongoing Shirui Lily Festival in Ukhrul district, had its signage altered by Army personnel, allegedly citing security concerns and the need to avoid provoking unrest. The incident sparked immediate outrage among valley-based civil society organizations and local communities, who view the removal as an affront to the state’s identity and integrity.

“This act of removing the name of the state from a state-owned vehicle is extremely unfortunate and unacceptable,” said COCOMI Convenor Khuraijam Athouba. “Following due deliberation in an executive committee meeting held today, COCOMI, along with the people of Manipur, earnestly demands a public apology from the Governor of Manipur for allowing his administration to facilitate such an act.”

In its official statement, COCOMI accused the government of “colluding with central forces” in undermining Manipur’s dignity and warned of further agitation if their demands are not met. The bandh is expected to bring normal life to a halt across the state, with transport services, markets, and offices likely to remain shut during the protest.

The committee also reiterated its long-standing concerns about the role of security forces in the state and what it calls the "deliberate dilution" of Manipur's territorial and administrative integrity. The Shirui Lily Festival, a major cultural event in the hill district of Ukhrul, has previously seen tensions between various communities, making security a critical concern.

As of now, there has been no official response from Raj Bhavan or the state administration regarding the demands or the bandh call. Meanwhile, COCOMI has urged the public to support the shutdown in defense of Manipur’s identity and collective pride.
