Guwahati, May 14, 2025, Virthli (ONP): The Assam government has intensified its crackdown on individuals accused of promoting anti-national sentiments through social media, with 61 people arrested so far, according to official sources.
The latest arrests were confirmed by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who announced on Tuesday that two individuals - Sahin Ahmed Mazumdar and Intesab Ahmed Laskar - were detained by Hailakandi and Cachar Police respectively, for allegedly spreading anti-national content online.
The arrests form part of a wider operation by Assam Police aimed at curbing online propaganda that undermines national unity and security. The Chief Minister emphasized the state's firm stance against such acts, stating, “Crackdown on anti-nationals continues.”
Over the past two weeks, law enforcement agencies across Assam have carried out a series of coordinated actions to monitor and investigate social media activity. Digital surveillance and cyber forensics units flagged suspicious content leading to multiple arrests across districts.
Sources close to the police said the majority of those arrested were found sharing or promoting content considered inflammatory, divisive, or supportive of separatist ideologies. Many of the suspects are under interrogation, and digital devices have been seized for further analysis.
