Tuiá¹haphai, November 25, 2023 (virthli): In a press release issued today, the Indigenous Tribal Leaders' Forum (ITLF) strongly condemned the recent attack on Joupi village in Kangpokpi district. The assailants, identified as Meitei militants, launched the attack in the early hours of the morning, using sophisticated weapons. Unfortunately, a village volunteer who was bravely guarding one of the bunkers lost his life during the assault.

The deceased villager has been identified as Khupminthang, son of L. Janglal from Phaikholum village. The courageous villagers, armed with single-barrel rifles, showed great bravery and managed to push back the attackers. However, amidst the chaos, some of the assailants reportedly went missing.

Concerns are now rising as the attackers regrouped and have been gathering in significant numbers near Ngarian in Bishnupur district since dawn. This gathering indicates a potential escalation of hostilities in the area, putting the nearby Kuki-Zo villages at imminent risk.

Led by Arambai Tenggol and supported by Meitei police commandos, the Meitei militants pose a serious threat to the surrounding villages. Their presence raises fears that a more substantial and deadly attack could be launched at any moment.

The ITLF vehemently condemned the continuous attacks on the Kuki-Zo villages and urgently called upon central security forces to intervene and protect Joupi and the nearby tribal villages.

In this time of tragedy, the ITLF extends its deepest condolences to the family and friends of Khupminthang. His loss serves as a somber reminder of the sacrifices made by village volunteers who selflessly dedicate themselves to protecting their communities.

The ITLF's condemnation of these attacks and their call for immediate action highlights the urgent need for intervention to ensure the safety and security of all residents in the tribal areas. It is crucial that central security forces address this escalating situation promptly.
