Imphal, December 31 2011: Around 70 Income Tax officials would arrive at Imphal on January 2 to form flying squads for checking movement and transfer of cash in any substantial amount.
Meanwhile, the Election Commission has prohibited the Manipur Public Service Commission from conducting MCS/MPS main examination which was scheduled on January 10 in view of the 10th Manipur Legislative Assembly elections.
A source in the State Election Department informed that Income Tax flying squads would seize money if any one was found carrying cash in any substantial amount and if the carriers cannot explain the source and purpose of the money.
District Election Officers have issued necessary orders in this regard.
In line with the Election Commission's instruction to check use of black money and incurring heavy expenditures in the election, candidates and their supporters would not be allowed to offer liquor or distribute any commodity to voters.
District Election Officers have set up flying squads in all police stations to carry out these measures.
The flying squads would have the authority to raid houses of even candidates in their efforts to ascertain the source and purpose of money seized by them.
They have also been empowered to launch investigation if any candidate is found possessing assets not compatible to his/her known sources of income, informed the source.
The Chief Electoral Officer has initiated necessary measures to ensure that all the candidates open separate bank accounts one day ahead of filing nomination papers and make all election related expenditures from these particular accounts.
Video surveillance teams and static teams have also been constituted for all Assembly Constituencies.
These teams would be activated once the election notification is issued on January 4 .
Notably, air intelligence units have been already deployed and put into action at Delhi, Kolkata, Guwahati, Silchar and Imphal airports.
It is reported that Chief Election Commissioner Y Quraisi would come to Imphal on January 5 to oversee the elections preparations being made in the State.
He would also convene a meeting with the Chief Secretaries and DGPs of Nagaland, Mizoram and Assam in connection with the Manipur elections.
