IMPHAL, May 23: In a major boost to the student community of the State, the Government of Manipur will select 228 students who excel in the Science stream in the class XII examination conducted by Council of Higher Secondary Educa-tion Manipur (COHSEM) for availing scholarship benefits under the Inspire Scheme.
The Scheme is informed to have been launched by the Government of India’s Department of Science and Technology to encourage students pursue Science courses in order to replenish strength of the country’s science teachers and scientists.
Under the Scheme a scholarship amount of Rs 80,000 will given to a student for pursuing the three- year graduation course in Science with a similar amount available in a year for those pursuing MSc course.
An informed source in COHSEM affirmed that result of the class XII examination would be declared within May 30.
Stating that a total of 22,776 candidates had appeared in the Council examination in Arts, Science and Commerce streams, the source said as per instruction of the Department of Science and Technology, which functions under the Ministry of Science and Technology (Govt of India) the financial assistance is to be given to one percent of the total class XII candidates.
Meritorious students (Science) frm both Government and private educa- tional institutions would be eligible for the scholarship with the condition that 75 percent aggregate should be the cut-off mark, the source informed while adding that failure to maintain the aggregate percent at graduation or MSc level would mean annulment of the financial assistance.
At the time of issuing mark-sheets after declaration of the class XII examination result 228 top ranking science students would be provided form for applying for the INSPIRE Scheme scholarship.
A total of 10,000 meritorious science students are to be covered under the Scheme out of which 2500 beneficiaries would be reserved for AIEEE, IIT-JEE, AIDMT, IIESR, NISER, KVPY, NTSE, International Olympiad medallists and JBNST students.
