New Delhi, Dec 10: During the ongoing Parliament Winter Session, Rajya Sabha MP K. Vanlalvena highlighted a pressing concern faced by Mizo tribals regarding Income Tax procedures, reaffirming that under the Indian Constitution and as specified in Income Tax Act Section 10(26), tribals residing in India are exempted from paying Income Tax.
Addressing the House today, Pu Vanlalvena stated that despite this constitutional protection, many Mizos continue to receive unexpected Income Tax Certificate notices from the Income Tax Office in Guwahati, Assam. He noted that Mizo citizens often approach the office to clarify their exemption, only to be repeatedly questioned or asked for unnecessary documentation by officials unfamiliar with the law.
He stressed that such actions by certain Income Tax officials create confusion, harassment, and procedural difficulties for Mizo taxpayers who are legally exempt. The MP described these instances as clear signs of misinterpretation and deviation from established legal provisions.
Vanlalvena informed the House that he has formally requested the Principal Chief Commissioner of Income Tax, Guwahati to issue clear directives and take corrective measures to prevent further inconvenience. He has also urged the Rajya Sabha Chairman to intervene and ensure appropriate action is taken to uphold the constitutional rights of tribal communities.
The issue has drawn attention to the need for better awareness and compliance among tax officials regarding exemptions applicable to tribal groups under Indian law.
