Assam Police, Forest Officials Destroy Rubber Saplings in Saikhawthlir Border Area

Aizawl, August 17, 2025: Tension flared along the Mizoram-Assam border after Assam Police personnel and Forest officials reportedly uprooted and destroyed hundreds of rubber saplings planted under the Mizoram government’s CM Rubber Mission in Saikhawthlir village, located near Diltlang on the Mizoram side.

According to Saikhawthlir Village Council President, Pu Lalthuthlungmawia, a team comprising eight Assam Police personnel and two officials from the Assam Forest Department entered the area around 2 p.m. on Saturday. They allegedly destroyed about 300 planted and unplanted rubber saplings.

The saplings had been planted as part of the ongoing CM Rubber Mission, aimed at promoting sustainable rubber cultivation in Mizoram.

In the wake of the incident, leaders from both Mizoram and Assam, along with Saikhawthlir villagers, held a joint meeting at the disputed site. During the discussions, local leaders stressed the need to prevent further confrontation and urged both sides to maintain peace, clarifying that work should continue only after proper consultation to avoid future clashes.

The border issue between Mizoram and Assam has long been a source of friction, with similar incidents of destruction and disputes over land use reported in the past. Authorities from both states are expected to hold further talks to address the latest tensions.
