Shillong, July 1, 2025: In a horrifying incident that has shocked Meghalaya, a young woman was brutally murdered by her former boyfriend in broad daylight at a busy parking lot in Pyndengumiong, Mairang, under Eastern West Khasi Hills district, on Monday evening.
The victim, Phyrnailin Kharsyntiew, aged 27 and a resident of Mawkhap Mawkynrang, was attacked around 5:30 PM while walking with her father, Sarding Mairang. The accused, Roberto Marngar (25) from Shyiap Mawnai, allegedly slit her throat from behind, causing fatal injuries that led to massive blood loss.
Despite being rushed to Mairang Civil Hospital, Phyrnailin was declared dead on arrival.
A Tragic End to a Troubled Relationship
According to preliminary reports, the victim had ended a year-long troubled relationship with Roberto, who had reportedly been making threats against her. Concerned for her safety, Phyrnailin had informed her father of the threats and met the accused in his presence on the day of the incident.
Her father recounted the horrific moment:
“I thought she had tripped, but when I turned around, I saw him slitting her throat.”
Eyewitnesses said Roberto continued to assault her even after the stabbing, before being overpowered by bystanders and handed over to the police.
Investigation Underway
A case of murder has been registered, and the accused remains in police custody. Authorities say the exact motive is under investigation, though it is believed to be linked to the failed relationship and possible threats made by the accused.
Phyrnailin’s father has made a public appeal for justice, urging the authorities to take the harshest action possible against the perpetrator.

The brutal nature of the crime, carried out in front of the victim’s parent and in a public place, has sparked widespread outrage, with locals demanding swift legal action and better protection for women in the state.
