Three Held by NIA for Deadly Attack on Security Forces in Manipur

New Delhi, June 8, 2025: According to a press release issued by the National Investigation Agency (NIA), three insurgents have been arrested in connection with a deadly attack on security forces in Manipur. The ambush, which occurred on January 17, 2024, in Moreh, Tengnoupal district, claimed the lives of two police commandos and injured several others.

The arrested individuals, along with their associates, allegedly planned, conspired, and executed the attack on an Indian Reserve Battalion (IRB) post and other security personnel.

Among those arrested is Thangminlen Mate, a resident of Tengnoupal district and a member of the Kuki Inpi Tengnoupal (KIT) insurgent group. As per the NIA, Mate played a key role in orchestrating and executing the attack. He was apprehended on May 19, 2025, in Silchar, Assam, and produced before the NIA Court in Guwahati, which remanded him to judicial custody until May 28. He is currently lodged in Central Jail, Guwahati.

The other two accused, Kamginthang Gangte - a member of the Kuki National Army (KNA) - and Hentinthang Kipgen alias Thangneo Kipgen, associated with the Village Volunteers group in Churachandpur district, were arrested in Imphal on June 6. They were granted transit remand until June 9, 2025, by a Duty Magistrate for transfer to the NIA Special Court in Guwahati. The NIA confirmed that they were part of the team that carried out the deadly assault.

The agency further stated that investigations are ongoing, and efforts are being made to identify and apprehend other individuals involved in the case (RC-05/2024/NIA/IMP).
