Guwahati, June 4, 2025, Virthli: In a significant tribute to one of Assam’s greatest sporting icons, the Sarusajai Sports Complex, located in the southern part of Guwahati, has been officially renamed as the **Arjuna Bhogeswar Baruah Sports Complex.
The announcement was made today by the Chief Minister’s Office via social media, honouring Shri Bhogeswar Baruah, the first Assamese athlete to win a gold medal at the Asian Games in 1966 and the first from the state to receive the prestigious Arjuna Award.
Widely regarded as a pioneer of athletics in Assam, Baruah’s legacy continues to inspire generations of sportspersons across the region. The renaming of the premier sports facility in Guwahati is seen as a symbolic gesture to commemorate his contributions to Indian sports.
State officials and sports enthusiasts have welcomed the move, calling it a long-overdue recognition of a legendary figure who paved the way for Assam's presence in national and international sporting arenas.
