Kohima, June 16, 2025: In a significant stride towards linguistic inclusivity and cultural preservation, Nagaland University has officially introduced Lotha language as a Modern Indian Language (MIL) subject at the undergraduate level, beginning from the 2025 - 2026 academic session.
The decision was adopted during the University’s 40th Academic Council Meeting, through resolution AC:40:18:1(2). The move marks a historic moment for the Lotha community, as their language gains formal recognition within the academic curriculum of higher education in the state.
An academician from the Lotha community welcomed the development, calling it “a small step for Lothas as we step into the new academic year.”
Lotha, one of Nagaland’s prominent indigenous languages, is known for its rich oral traditions and cultural depth. Its academic inclusion aims to foster a greater sense of identity and linguistic pride among students, while contributing to the broader effort of preserving endangered native languages.
As per Notification No. NU/ACAD-398/2025 dated June 16, 2025, Nagaland University has directed all concerned units - including the Dean of Humanities, Controller of Examinations, and principals of affiliated colleges -to prepare for its implementation.
