CM Lalduhoma Urges Refugees to Respect Mizoram’s Laws, Decries Misdeeds of 'Few Miscreants'

Aizawl, June 30, 2025: Mizoram Chief Minister Pu Lalduhoma has issued a strong appeal to refugees residing in the state to respect the rule of law, warning that the unlawful actions of a few are tarnishing the image of many law-abiding individuals.

Speaking at the Remna Ni (Mizoram Peace Accord Day) celebration held at Lammual, Aizawl, the Chief Minister acknowledged recent concerns raised by the Union Home Minister, who stated that nearly 50 percent of crimes in Mizoram were allegedly committed by refugees. While describing the situation as regrettable, Lalduhoma clarified that such acts were not representative of the entire refugee population.

“It is regrettable that the actions of a few miscreants tarnish the image of many law-abiding individuals. I appeal to all our refugee friends to respect the laws of our land,” the Chief Minister said, calling for responsible conduct and peaceful coexistence.

Organised by the Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP) General Headquarters, the Remna Ni observance marked the anniversary of the signing of the 1986 Mizoram Peace Accord. Lalduhoma, accompanied by his wife Pi Liansailovi, attended the programme as Chief Guest.

The event began with the hoisting of the Remna Ni flag by the Chief Minister, followed by a rendition of the peace anthem “Ro Min Reksak Ang Che” by the 1st Battalion MAP Brass Band.

In his keynote address, the Chief Minister stressed that peace is the foundation of development and progress. “My government shall leave no stone unturned to preserve and promote peace in our state,” he said.

Highlighting Mizoram’s infrastructural growth, Lalduhoma noted that the state is moving toward greater connectivity, especially between its southern and northern regions, and called for stronger relationships with communities outside the state. He underscored that Mizo nationalism should be defined by unity and inclusive progress - not hostility.

He also emphasised the importance of maintaining a respectful and cooperative relationship with the Central Government, regardless of political differences. “Politics must be guided by mutual respect. Let us uphold dignity in public discourse and refrain from divisive or inflammatory rhetoric,” he stated.

Concluding his address, Lalduhoma urged citizens to revive the communal harmony upheld by earlier generations. “Let peace and harmony prevail in our society and in our neighbourhoods. Let our streets once again become places of peace,” he said.

The event was chaired by Dr. C. Lalremruata, Vice President of the MZP. An opening prayer was offered by Rev. Dr. Lalhmangaiha, General Secretary of the Council of Churches of Mizoram (CCM), followed by a report presented by MZP General Secretary Pu Chinkhanmanga Thomte.

MZP President Pu H. Lalthianghlima reiterated that Remna Ni is a celebration for all Mizos, meant to transcend political and generational divisions. He said the observance aims not to glorify the past, but to honour the sacrifices made in the pursuit of peace.

Notable dignitaries present at the event included Home Minister Pu K. Sapdanga; Ministers Pu B. Lalchhanzova and Pu F. Rodingliana; Deputy Speaker Pu Lalfamkima; Adviser to the Chief Minister Pu Lalmuanpuia Punte; and several senior officials.

Since 2018, the MZP has honoured individuals and organisations who have contributed to peace in Mizoram. However, no peace honours were awarded this year. Past recipients include Pu Laldenga, Rev. Dr. Lalsawma, and the Mizoram Kohhran Hruaitu Committee.
