Guwahati, June 18, 2025: The 6th meeting of the Sub-Committee for the implementation of the historic Assam Accord was held at Janata Bhawan, Guwahati, on Wednesday under the chairmanship of Assam Minister Atul Bora. The meeting focused on the government's ongoing efforts to safeguard the rights of the indigenous people of Assam and ensure their holistic development, a mission pursued under the leadership of Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma.
A key highlight of the meeting was the review of progress on the 39 recommendations made by the Justice Biplab Kumar Sarma Committee concerning Clause 6 of the Assam Accord. Clause 6 seeks to protect, preserve, and promote the cultural, social, and linguistic identity of the Assamese people.
Minister Atul Bora confirmed that the Sub-Committee working on Clause 6 will submit its final report to the Chief Minister before August 8, 2025.
The meeting was attended by senior members of the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU), including President Utpal Sarma, Chief Advisor Dr. Samujjal Bhattacharya, and General Secretary Samiran Phukan. Also present were top officials from the Implementation of Assam Accord Department, including Commissioner & Secretary G.D. Tripathi and Secretary Pallav Gopal Jha.
The AASU leadership offered key suggestions to expedite the implementation process, including the formation of a sub-committee on Clause 7 of the Accord. Responding positively, Minister Bora instructed concerned officials to ensure time-bound and effective execution of tasks in line with the government's vision.

Reaffirming the government's commitment, Bora stated, “Focused implementation of the Assam Accord clauses remains a priority for our government. The protection of indigenous identity is central to our development agenda.”
The Assam Accord, signed in 1985, remains a cornerstone of Assam’s socio-political fabric, and the ongoing implementation of its clauses continues to be a key focus of the state government.
