World Meetei Council Supports COCOMI; Urges Strike Delay

VIRTHLI

Imphal, May 21, 2025, Virthli (ONP): The World Meetei Council (WMC) has expressed strong support for the Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) in response to what it calls a “senseless” decision by the Manipur government currently under President's Rule. In a statement issued today, the WMC condemned actions taken by the interim administration that allegedly seek to "hide the name Manipur" in public settings, such as on state buses.

World Meetei Council Supports COCOMI; Urges Strike Delay

The council emphasized that no democratic government should suppress the identity of its own state and questioned whether the Government of India would tolerate such actions if they involved concealing the country's name or national flag.

Calling for accountability, WMC demanded an unconditional apology from the Governor and his team for what it views as an affront to Manipur’s identity.

However, WMC also urged COCOMI to reconsider the timing of its proposed 48-hour general strike. The council appealed for a deferment of the strike to accommodate the sentiments of the Ukhrul public, who are set to participate in the annual Sirui Lily Festival—a significant cultural event in the region. WMC highlighted the importance of respecting the spirit of unity and brotherhood among the people of Manipur.

The message was issued by Yambem Arun Meetei, Secretary General of the World Meetei Council.
